pastor's note

A poem for President’s Day by Kaylin Weir:

If I had a day named after me,
I’d hope it would stand for care.
For the courage to love something
without pretending it is flawless.
For the willingness to sit with what is uncomfortable
rather than grasping for certainty.
For the belief that nuance is not weakness
and empathy is not fragility.
For the courage to love a country
without placing it beyond reflection.
For the kind of strength
that does not depend on hardening.
Because the strongest leaders and the strongest people
are not the ones who harden,
but the ones who refuse to lose their humanity
while holding power at all.

May we all live our lives in ways that, were a day to be named after us, it would be a day of softness, love, compassion, and care for all.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Central’s Social Team invites you to join us for the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius annual “Fat Tuesday” Parade on Tuesday, February 17th.  Let’s meet up in front of Leland House (2711 Market St.) around 6pm before the parade kicks off at 6:30. If you have any questions, reach out to Bryce.

Ash Wednesday Service

Join us on Wednesday, February 18th at 7pm as we start the season of Lent with an Ash Wednesday contemplative service in the sanctuary.

“Lent marks the forty days leading up to Easter, mirroring the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness…It’s the downward slope of God—the Great Descent, where the whole Church walks toward the cross. Of course, the cross isn’t the end of the story, but this season of grief is carved out to acknowledge the reality of Christ’s sacrifice. And the reality of suffering that so many of our circumstances reflect too—our own pain and grief and despair. Easter is coming, yes. But for now, we sit in the ashes of our broken dreams and broken hearts, knowing that God sits here with us.”

Lent Book Study

This year during Lent, groups at Central will read Zach Lambert’s book, Better Ways to Read the Bible. In this compassionate guide, Lambert dismantles four common lenses for reading the Bible that lead to harm, then offers four new lenses that promote healing and wholeness. This book welcomes all Christians--regardless of background, doubts, or wounds--to reengage Scripture in life-giving ways.
Go ahead and grab the book from your favorite retailer. If finances are a strain, let us know and we will get you a copy.
