- Read Genesis 29. What is your initial reaction to this text and/or to the sermon?
- In this story, Jacob is the victim of deception very soon after he himself deceived both his father and his brother. Deception seems to be something that gets passed down from generation to generation in this family. What kinds of things have been passed down in your family? Physical characteristics? Stories? Habits? Ways of being in relationship?
- One of the gifts of the book of Genesis is that it is totally honest about these ancestors of our faith. In what ways have we been dishonest about our own ancestors or origin stories?
- What does it look like to break generational cycles like the one that plays out in this story?
